Thomas F. Thomas (“Tom”), 62, of Canton, GA passed away suddenly on Saturday, July 11, 2020 while cycling.

Tom was born April 27, 1958, in Bluefield, West Virginia to Joseph and Betsy Thomas and grew up in Roanoke, Virginia. He joined the US Navy in 1978 and was honorably discharged after 10 years. He continued his civil service career as a public relations professional for 32 years, most notably, at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Tom was a strong athlete and an avid cyclist. He also loved travel, scuba diving, and everything outdoors, except running, but he did it anyway to complete two Ironman 70.3 triathlons. He was a most wonderful man, father, brother, and friend - a true Tall Man Among Men.

Tom is survived by his daughter, Sally Elizabeth King (Trey); step-son Nicholas VanWeele (Hannah); step-daughter Ashlee Sharpe; grandchildren - Hadley and Harman King, Grant and Emerson VanWeele; parents Joseph and Betsy Thomas; siblings Joseph B. Thomas Jr. (“Toby”), Margaret Allison Lowry (Roger).

The family will receive family and friends from 4 to 5:30 at South Canton Funeral Home & Chapel on Thursday, July 16, 2020. Service will follow in the chapel at 5:30 pm. Interment will be at the Georgia National Cemetary in Canton, GA at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to an education charity established on Tom’s behalf to benefit children of Dive with Martin employees, a group Tom considered family. Contact Paddi Davies at Alternately, Tom would value a donation to benefit Wounded Warriors.

I worked with Tom from the time I started at VA in 1993 until I retired in 2013. We had a great working relationship and shared a lot of success in service to the Nation’s veterans. An American veteran who continued his career of service at VA, I admired Tom and aspired to be more like him. He was the perfect marriage of style and substance. I told him often that if I had 10 percent of his style, I could consider a comparison to him. I am sad Tom did not get to the retirement he so deserved. My condolences to his entire family. He was a good, good man and leaves a legacy to admire.

To the Family of Tom Thomas,
Please accept our heartfelt sympathies on the loss of your son, brother, father, grandfather and the many other roles he played in the lives of family, friends and colleagues.
I met Tom shortly after coming to work at VA headquarters in 1999. His genuine smile and easy going nature made him easy to like. Although Tom was in Atlanta and I was in D.C. we enjoyed many telephone visits and looked forward to the in-person opportunities we were able to share at the various conferences we attended.
No matter what the crisis du jour might have been, Tom was always rock solid and steady in his advice, considerate of the many facets of a given situation and the consummate professional in carrying out the appropriate action steps.
Please know I always considered Tom a friend. Know, too, I will be one of the many who will miss him.
We will be making a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project in Tom's name.
May the pain of your loss be softened by the joy of the memories you created together.
As a fellow Veteran, I offer you, Tom, a final salute. Godspeed my Friend.
James and Elizabeth Benson

Was looking forward to diving and biking with Tom this winter in Cozumel. He was always fun on Dive with Martin dive boats. Shocked and feeling a disproportionate sense of loss for someone I did not know that well.

Kind, funny, genuine, mixed with a touch or sarcasm. He stored my RV at his home for about year and then moved it for me. I mailed payment to him and he mailed me the check back basically saying "seriously, no thanks." This was his note back that was attached to my check. It ended, "you're my friend". Tom showed love isn't a thought but an action. Thanks buddy.
