Paul E. Weatherby, age 92, of Ball Ground, GA. passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at his
residence on the family farm that has been in the Weatherby family since 1851. Raised on
the farm, Paul had a true love for the land and, through the years, raised livestock, horses, and
agricultural crops. After high school, Paul received his business degree from The
Atlanta College of Business. After his college graduation, he married Dorothy (Dot)
Galloway of Canton, GA.
He began his career in 1951 with Norfolk Southern Railway and then transitioned into
management in 1955 at the US Department of Agriculture in Cherokee County. Paul then
started a new chapter of his career with the Electric Membership Corporation (EMC) as
President of Amicolola EMC in Jasper, Georgia, until 1973. He was then named President
and CEO of Cobb EMC in Marietta, GA. Upon taking over this small EMC with only 25
employees, he grew this organization to be the second largest EMC in the nation and
became renowned and a leader in the industry until his retirement in 1993.
Paul was a lifelong civic and community volunteer. He served several years as a board
member of both Cobb and Cherokee Chambers of Commerce, and was President Elect of
the Cobb Chamber of Commerce. He was also a Mason for 68 years and became a Master
Mason in the Sharp Mountain Masonic Lodge, and was also a member of the Marietta Lions
Club.
Paul loved quality development, job creation, and community improvements that would be
beneficial to all Cherokee County residents. Therefore, he ran and was elected to serve as
District 1 Cherokee County Commissioner. In recognition of his many community
contributions, a recreational park was constructed and named Weatherby Park in the
Clayton Community in his honor.
Above all else, Paul was a devout Christian and faithful servant to God. He was a lifelong
member and Deacon of Hopewell Baptist Church in Ball Ground, Ga. He will be laid to rest
at the Hopewell Church Cemetery next to his beloved wife of 73 years and other family
members.
