James Omer Burton, age 88, of Canton, Georgia, passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at his home.
James was born in Tignall, Georgia, and later moved with his family to Thomson, Georgia, where he grew up. He attended Thomson High School and, following graduation, continued his education at West Georgia College and North Georgia College.
He began his professional career as a salesman with Standard Oil of Kentucky (Chevron), working in the sales office where he developed the skills that would shape his future success. He later opened his first full-service gas station in Atlanta, Georgia, and went on to expand his business interests over the years.
James was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who deeply loved his family and friends. He could often be found at the ballpark, either playing or coaching, always supporting those he loved. He had a lifelong passion for sports, especially the Atlanta Braves and the Georgia Bulldogs. He was a strong and steady presence in his family’s life and will be remembered for his dedication, character, and love.
A graveside service will be held at 3:00 PM on Thursday, March 26, 2026 at Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens, with U.S. Army Honors and Pastor Don Cummings officiating.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at South Canton Funeral Home in Canton, Georgia, and from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at Curtis Funeral Home in Thomson, Georgia.
James was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Louise Burton (Walker); his father, Montie Burton; his mother, Thelma Burton; his brothers, Carroll Burton, Mack Burton, and Ray Burton; and his sister, Rebecca Reese (Burton).
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Julie Burton; his daughter, Lauri Burton; his grandchildren, Grant Burton, Hunter Burton, and Amanda Watson (Burton); his brother-in-law, Teddy Reese; his sister-in-law, Annie Florence Burton (Land); his nephews, Roger Burton, Perry Burton, and Billy Walker; and his nieces, Sandra Inglett (Burton), Tracy Ansley (Reese), Carla Cole (Reese), and Bonnie Baskett.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Georgia Baptist Children’s Home.
