Frank John Iredell passed away peacefully February 9th, 2024 from complications of a recent stroke. Born on April 10,1926 in Greenville, SC, he was the son of the late Francis John McCartney Iredell and Anne Christopherson. He is predeceased by his wife Virginia, and his son Frank Iredell Jr. (Jay). He is survived by his daughters Betsy Iredell (Lawrence Freil) Gingee Iredell Black (Bill) and daugher-in-law, Joanna Iredell. His sister in law, Elizabeth Campbell, Grandchildren, Ryann Iredell, Brandon Black (Maddie) Leslie Iredell-Lyne, Jamie Iredell-Lyne, Great grandson Mathew Jay Hannah, and Great Granddaughter Iredell Victoria (Irie) Black.
Frank graduated from Tech High, Atlanta, GA in 1943. He entered the army in 1944 at 19 during World War 11. He was deployed to the European theater, and fought during the battle of the bulge under General George Patton. His time in service was spent in reconnaissance, and liberation of P.O.W camps. After the war, he returned to the Atlanta area, and entered Georgia Tech where he became a civil engineer. Frank worked as a civil engineer for John Jay Hart company, and then the Georgia Department of Transportation. At the GA DOT he rose to Design Group leader and his team of civil engineers designed many of the major roads in and around Macon, and Savannah. Additionally, he was the lead civil engineer for the roads leading to the Talmadge Memorial Cable Bridge spanning the Savannah river working directly with the bridge designers of Parsons Brinckerhoff. Frank met and Married the former Virginia Alsobrook, and they settled in Decatur, GA. He was an avid boater, golfer, and couples bridge player with his wife and the many friends they had in the area. Frank and Virginia were married for 72 years until she passed away in 2021. At nearly 98 years Frank was still an active person spending time with his family and friends.
