Buds early schooling included North Jay and one of the last surviving students of the tiny Severy Hill School, East Dixfield. He graduated from Dixfield High School in 1952, then serving The US Navy from 1953 to 1957 as a Fire Control Technician (firing the big guns) on The USS Salem CA-139.
