Obituary for Viola G Rogers

Viola G. Rogers, 89, of Canton, GA., passed away Sunday, March 10, 2013, at Canton Nursing Center, Canton, GA.

She was born on February 24, 1924, in Cass County, IL, the daughter of George H. and Grace E. Jockisch. She married Floyd Wankel on September 16, 1941. He preceded her in death on February 19, 1983. She later married Lelan Rogers who preceded her in death in 1996.

Surviving are her sons, Dale (wife, Marie) Wankel of Canton, GA; Roger (wife, Teresa) Wankel of Blue Ridge, GA; Donald (wife, Donnie) Wankel of Hendersonville, NC; and Robert (wife, Julie) Wankel of Smyrna, TN; nine grandchildren; one sister, Irene DeSollar of Beardstown, IL; thirteen great-granchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father and mother; two brothers, Clyde and Clifford; and two sisters, Fern Hendricker and Dollie Krohe.

Viola attended elementary school at Black Oak School and Edgewood School in Cass County, Illinois. She helped out with farming chores while living near Beardstown, drove tractors, carried meals to family members working in the fields, and also raised watermelons and cantaloupes. She moved with her husband and family to Ft. Wayne, IN, in 1956 when he took a job there with Farnsworth Electronics (IT&T). They subsequently moved to Orlando, FL, when Floyd took a job with the Martin Company.

She was trained to upholster furniture and make custom draperies there and was engaged in this business for a number of years. Following the death of Mr. Rogers, she moved to Georgia to be closer to her sons and their families. Viola was a devout Christian and an active member of the Church of the Nazarene in the locations where she lived.

Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m .on Saturday, April 27, at the South Canton Funeral Home in Canton, GA. A second memorial service will be held in Beardstown, IL, later this year. Interment will be at the Jockisch Cemetery near Bluff Springs, IL.
