Obituary for Robert Allen Lockwood

Robert Lockwood of Buford, GA, passed away on January 10, 2021 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center at the age of 79. He was formerly from Monroe Township, New Jersey. Robert was one of five children born to J. William and Ida M. Lockwood. Born in Long Branch, NJ, he was raised in Highland Park, NJ.

Bob majored in Forestry at Paul Smith’s College in the Adirondacks, New York and graduated from Utah State University.

He served proudly in the United States Army Security Agency for four years, stationed in Japan. Working in signals intelligence sparked an interest in technology which Bob carried throughout the rest of his life. He was an early adopter of home computing, even building his own computer with his sons.

Bob’s early career in forestry took him across the United States, and he spent his bachelor years studying and working in states ranging from Florida to Alaska. After working for the State of Hawaii for over a decade, Bob and his young family moved to New Jersey where he continued his public service with the US Department of Agriculture for another 14 years, retiring in 2004.

Bob was also a creator at heart and enjoyed cooking, tinkering, building, and repairing anything that drew his varied interests which ranged from small engines to banjos to potato cannons. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed time spent fishing and grilling. Prior to his retirement, Bob enjoyed summer trips to the family cottage at Lake George, New York; after retirement, this love of nature shifted to his own property in Petersburgh, New York where he spent many summer days tending to the land.

Bob was preceded in death by parents William and Ida Lockwood, and brothers Peter S. Lockwood and Donald M. Lockwood. Married for 41 years, Bob is survived by wife Mikiko Lockwood of Buford, GA; eldest son William, his wife Karen and their sons Liam, Patrick and Colin Lockwood of Canton, GA; youngest son Glenn Lockwood and his wife Jennifer Fritz of Oakland, CA; older brother James and wife Phyllis Lockwood of East Brunswick, NJ; younger brother Thomas Lockwood of Centerville, OH; sister-in-law Phyllis Brown (Donald) Lockwood of Amherst, NH; and many nieces and nephews spanning two generations.

A memorial service is planned for later this year following the pandemic.
