BORN JULY 22, 1919
Modena Marie Hoge (Jorgensen), 101 of Canton, Georgia passed away Saturday, September 5, 2020 after a brief illness.
Modena was born in Webster County, Nebraska on July 22, 1919 where she lived for several years on the Jorgensen family farm. Her parents were George and Myrtle Jorgensen (Lockhard) of Inavale, Nebraska.
She attended school at Inavale School from 1st grade until graduation in 1937. After graduation she attended University of Nebraska Agricultural College in Lincoln, Nebraska. While attending school she met and married Gene P. Hoge on November 9, 1939, they were married for 53 years and spent many wonderful, loving years together. They moved several times over the years, from Lincoln, Nebraska to Dexter, Missouri, to Franklin, Indiana, to Enterprise, Alabama to Mansfield, Massachusetts to Taunton, Massachusetts. She became a resident of Georgia in 1995 living in Marietta, Cartersville, and Canton.

Modena faced three terrible tragedies while growing up on the Jorgensen farm that defined her life and her outlook: a fire wiped up everything the family had; after rebuilding their lives a flood again wiped out everything and the terrible dust storms of the 1930’s. Through all these tragedies she never lost her faith in our Lord, Jesus Christ. She credited her faith
with giving her the strength and courage to go on in life. And with the longevity of her life, in 2019 on the occasion of her 100th birthday she received a proclamation from the mayor and City of Cartersville, Georgia proclaiming July 22nd as “Modena Hoge Day”.

She loved cooking and baking for her many friends and family, her pecan pies and homemade applesauce were the best ever. She enjoyed sewing, making stuffed animals and college football. She loved crossword puzzles, dominoes, Rummikub and reading, mostly mystery novels. On Saturdays during football season she would tell everyone she would be busy watching college football games and not to bother her. Her first love was the University of Nebraska Cornhusker football team, after she became a Georgia resident, she also grew to love the University of Georgia Bulldog football team. She loved to line dance; square dance; she taught exercise to her friends and neighbors at The Cove Apartments in Cartersville, Georgia.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Gene, her daughter Janean Endraske and granddaughter Heather
Woodward. She is survived by her son George A. Hoge and his wife Brook; 7 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

“ And in the end, it’s not the years in a life, it’s the life in the years” – Abraham Lincoln

A graveside service and burial will be held later in September in Taunton, Massachusetts. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta - Scottish Rite Hospital, 1001 Johnson Ferry Rd. NE, Atlanta, Georgia 30342 in her memory.

“ You may be gone from our sight, but you are never gone from our hearts”.

Modena was one of the most wonderful people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting and knowing. This remarkable woman should be a role model for us all. I never saw her without a smile. She had time to devote to everyone she came in contact with. I met her at the East Cobb Senior Center and spent many hours in the same line dance classes which Modena attended. We are all better off to have known this special lady and we are sending our sincere condolences to her dear family. Rest in Peace dear Modena. We love you. Always, Sharon McGrath
