Obituary for Marvin Eugene "Gene" Brooks

Marvin Eugene Brooks, Sr. (Gene), age 90, passed away on December 6, 2022. He was born in Atlanta on August 2,1932, the son of the late George Lee and Rubye McDaniel Brooks. He grew up in Fulton County. Gene worked 35 years for Lockheed Martin in Marietta, GA. During those years he was involved in multiple aircraft development programs including C-130, C-5, C-141 and 5-3. He was part of the engineering staff that guided hundreds of engineers during design, implementations, testing and certification efforts of those aircraft. This involved traveling to various locations around the world and many long hours away from home. During those travels, he worked with many prominent individuals including Kelly Johnson and Wernher von Braun, among others. He also acted in a management role and intermediary between salaried and hourly (union) workers.

Although the C-141 and 5-3 platforms have been retired for many years, the C-5 continues to be in service 50 years after development. The C-130 is currently still in production 68 years after development and includes more than 15 operator countries with nearly 6,000 aircraft built to date. Over those years, thousands of people have been and are currently employed in the production and maintenance of the C-130. Additionally, many other people have been rescued, supported, or evacuated by the C-5 and C-130 aircraft, which is what they were meant to do. After he retired, he was an avid reader, enjoyed woodworking, playing golf, fishing and traveling.

Gene is survived by his wife Kathy; sister Sandra; children Terry, Gene, Jr., Mark, and Frank; stepchildren Cynthia, Celia, and Laurie; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren and five step great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1 pm on January 21, 2023, at Ball Ground First Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers you may donate to Ball Ground First Baptist Church, 445 Old Canton Rd., Ball Ground, GA 30107.
