Obituary for Jimmie Sellers

Jimmie Sellers, age 82, of Canton, GA passed away Monday, February 13, 2023 at Northside Hospital Cherokee. Jimmie was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was married for over 50 years to the love of his life, Hanne, whom he met while the aircraft carrier he was aboard, the USS Coral Sea, made a port call to Vancouver, BC. They were engaged days later, and were married within a few months. Although Jimmie and Hanne came from two different worlds, he from the mill village of Cabbagetown, Georgia, and she from Copenhagen, Denmark, their bond was rooted firmly and they were an example of love and commitment to everyone they knew. They lived every day with love, a healthy dose of humor, and relentless devotion to one another.

Jimmie retired from the military in August of 1982, after a ten-year stint in the U.S. Navy, followed by another eleven years in the U.S. Coast Guard. He participated in various missions as a Radioman, from the search and recovery of multiple Gemini and Apollo missions after splashdown, to coordinating counter-narcotics operations in the Caribbean, to leading radio efforts during the fire and rescue of the crew aboard a Cunard cruise liner.
While he was distinguished in his career, he is best known as “Daddy” and “Pop Pop,” and was the family member that could always be trusted to fix anything, anytime. He showed his love for others through his labors of helping, and often reminded his family that “you should always help others, and always help before they’re so desperate that they have to come begging for help.”

Jimmie always made time for others, and was known for his deep booming laughter, his infectious grins, mischievous jokes, and his constant deep bass voice singing and humming as he went throughout every day. If you were ever looking for Jimmie, you only had to listen for where in the house the sound of singing a hymn was coming from, and you could always follow the singing and find him without fail.

Even in his later years, two things were always consistent: his daily routine of getting a biscuit or “McGriller” (McGriddle) and a senior citizen-priced black coffee, and also his love for continuing to tinker with and rebuild boat motors and car motors.
