Gene Whitaker passed away peacefully on September 23, 2018 at Cameron Hall of Canton in Canton, GA. He is preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Florence Whitaker; one brother, Bob Whitaker; and his loving wife of 67 years, Faye Whitaker.
Gene was born on July 7, 1932 in Licking, MO where he graduated high school. Gene was a talented athlete, playing baseball and basketball. Shortly after completing high school, he married Faye, his high school sweetheart. Gene then joined the Navy and re-located to California where he was stationed for several years. He served on an aircraft carrier in the Korean War.
After completing his military service, Gene attended the University of Missouri where he completed a degree in Forestry. His career took him to Georgia where he spent time in Dahlonega before settling down in Canton, GA. Gene spent over 30 years in the forestry industry working for Georgia Kraft Paper Company. His love of hunting and fishing made him perfectly suited for a career in the great outdoors.
Gene was a loyal friend and a fierce competitor. He was an avid tennis player and long-time ALTA Coach, and he was a daily fixture at the local tennis courts even into his later years. In addition, Gene was a dedicated Little League Baseball coach and supporter. Gene also nurtured his intellectual side and was a voracious reader and history buff, and he loved engaging in thoughtful, spirited discussions. In his retirement years, Gene became a talented carver, woodworker and carpenter, often gifting and sharing his newest pieces with friends and family.
In everything he did, whether it be coaching or creating, Gene was patient, disciplined, and generous. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend, and he was always eager to support and encourage other. Gene was a true student of life, always striving to expand his knowledge, skills, and experience, so he could enrich and invest in the lives of others.
Funeral Services are scheduled for 9:00 AM, on Tuesday, September 25, 2018, from the Chapel of South Canton Funeral Home with Rev. Matt Whitaker officiating. Interment will follow at Georgia National Cemetery at 10:00 AM.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, Monday, September 24, 2018 at South Canton Funeral Home.
Survivors include his son, Mark (Angie) Whitaker of Canton, GA; his grandchildren, Heather (Andy) Moore of Macon, GA and Matt (Sydney) Whitaker of Portland, OR; one great-granddaughter; his brother Glenn Whitaker of Licking, MO; his brother Gary Whitaker of Lake Charles, LA; as well as nieces, nephews and other extended family.
