Drew Shurmantine passed away quietly and suddenly after spending the day doing yardwork with his wife Pam at their home in Canton, Georgia. Drew left behind his sons Bradley and Gifford, who he loved and admired, and to whom he was utterly devoted as their secretary, chauffeur, and friend—as well as his wife and best friend Pam, who he deeply loved and who made all things possible for him, for over 41 years.

Drew left behind his mother Marie; he was a loving and conscientious son, spoke frequently with her, saw her whenever he could, and took care of her as best as he was able. Drew was also survived by his brother Brad and his sister Lori; Drew was a warm, affectionate brother who took the greatest interest in their families and their lives, and felt great pleasure in their accomplishments.

Drew grieved the death of his oldest son, Geoffrey; his brother Kent; and his father, Don, who died when Drew was a young boy.

Drew was an accomplished man who rose to prominence in the business world, loved to read, was a passionate sports fan, did needlework, and was a beautiful writer. Most of all he loved just being with his family and his many, many friends. His greatest achievements came through his service to the Catholic Church and to his fellow parishioners at St. Michael the Archangel and Our Lady of La Salette, many of whom became his closest friends.

In his parishes Drew served as Mass Captain, Altar Server, Lector, Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist, and Ultreya Leader. He was most proud of his participation in the Knights of Columbus; having grown up without his father, he was deeply inspired by an organization dedicated to serving widows and children. Drew was honored to be a 4th Degree Knight and treasurer in this organization for several years.

Drew was active in the Cursillo Movement of the Archdiocese of Atlanta, and facilitated many weekend retreats for Catholic men. The crowning achievement of his life was his acceptance into the diocesan Diaconate program in 2011, at the age of 62. Drew spent the last two years of his life in intense study, prayer, meditation, and service, as he readied himself to answer God’s call and serve God however He desired.

A Rosary/Visitation honoring Drew’s life will be at Our Lady of La Salette Church in Canton on Wednesday May 29, from 6:00-9:00pm. Drew’s funeral will be on Thursday, May 30, at 6:00pm, at St. Michael the Archangel Church in Woodstock. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Catholic Cursillo Movement or the Deacons’ Assistance Fund of the Archdiocese of Atlanta.
