Obituary for Dr. Alan R. Swayze

Dr. Alan Rhoades Swayze passed away peacefully at home on May 4, 2022. He was surrounded by family he loved and who loved him deeply. Alan was born on April 2, 1967 in Jackson, Mississippi. He was the fourth child of Orrin H. Swayze, Jr. and JoLynn Rhoades Swayze.

After graduating from Jackson Preparatory School, Alan attended University of Mississippi, graduating magna cum laude, class of 1989. He went on to attend the University of Mississippi Medical School in Jackson.

In 1992 Alan married Rhonda Bennett, daughter of Frank and Joanne Bennett of Magnolia, Mississippi. He and Rhonda had twin boys in 1997, and he finished his Orthopaedic Residency, also at the University of Mississippi, in 1998. Alan was awarded the distinguished Donald Imrie award for most outstanding performance in Orthopaedic Surgery during his senior year of residency.

Alan and Rhonda moved to Alexander City, AL to start private practice. Later they moved to McComb, Mississippi, and added two more boys to their tribe, where they continued in a private Orthopaedic practice.

In 2003, Alan and Rhonda made a final move to Canton, Georgia to join Pinnacle Orthopaedics, and to work with his brother, Scott, also an orthopedic surgeon. Alan practiced at Northside Cherokee Hospital until his retirement in August 2016. He was extremely humbled to have Operating Room #4 dedicated in his honor.

Alan loved to laugh; his smile and sense of humor would light up the room. He was an extraordinary surgeon, beloved by his many patients, staff and fellow physicians. He deeply loved Rhonda, his boys, his extended family and church, as well as classic cars and many, many dogs. Alan had a quiet, humble servant’s heart and loved Jesus above all.

Alan is survived by his wife, Rhonda, and sons, Aden, Ben, Logan, and Jacob, as well as his parents, Orrin and JoLynn Swayze of Jackson, Mississippi, sister, Alison (Max) Bowman of Ridgeland, Mississippi, brother Scott (Carol) Swayze of Vinings, GA, and brother Stewart (Vicki) Swayze of Jackson, Mississippi, mother-in-law Joanne Bennett, sister-in-law Cindy Bennett and brother-in-law Grant (Leah Claire) Bennett. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who adored him.

Visitation will be Wednesday, May 11 from 6-8:00 pm at Woodstock City Church, 149 Ridgewalk Parkway, Woodstock, GA 30188.
Memorial Service will be held Friday, May 13 at 1:00 at The Church of the Apostles, 3585 Northside Parkway, Atlanta, GA 30327.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Multiple System Atrophy
Coalition.
