Obituary for Dorothy "Dot" Grimes (Wright)

Surrounded by family, Mrs. Dorothy Wright Grimes, age 92, of Holly Springs, formerly of the Crabapple community, joined her beloved husband Dean on Valentine’s Day, Sunday, February 14, 2021. Dorothy, or Mrs. Dot, was born in Atlanta, GA, September 26, 1928, daughter of the late Clarence Eugene Wright and Vera Mae Ledford. She was a long time, active member of Hickory Road Baptist Church. Before moving to Holly Springs in 1996, she served in many positions including Vacation Bible School Director, Sunday School teacher, and Primary Sunday School Director, at Crabapple Baptist Church for more than 40 years.
After graduation from Milton High School, Mrs. Dot went to work for Chrysler Corporation as a clerical assistant. She married the love of her life, Dean Grimes, on September 1, 1946. After her first child was born, she quit work to stay at home to raise her family. As a “non-working” mom, she volunteered and served as room mother for her children’s elementary classes, was a 4-H adult leader, belonged to the Birmingham Home Extension Club, and served in many capacities at Crabapple Baptist Church. She gardened, canned, cooked, and sewed most of her and her daughters’ clothing (even making her husband a suit). She did not return to working outside the home until her youngest was in college. And then, it was to work along side her husband at Metro Electric Supply. She retired from Metro to take care of Dean, as well as her ailing father and mother-in-law. She unselfishly cared for all three with great love, compassion, and without ever complaining.
She will be forever known for the thousands of greeting cards she sent for birthdays, anniversaries, illnesses, and holidays. Her family joked that if she ever met you and found out your birthdate, the next year you would start receiving a birthday card. As an amazing cook, she also prepared and shared hundreds of pecan pies, strawberry cakes, pans of dressing, and other goodies. She was a mentor and Christian role model to many young women at Crabapple and Hickory Road. Most importantly, she prayed for so many including her children, grandchildren, family, friends, and even those she did not know personally. Her faith was extraordinarily strong.
Mrs. Dot was preceded in death by her husband Dean Grimes and her parents. She is survived by her children, Rick (Melissa) Grimes, Canton; Vicki (Ken) Hardin, Carrollton; Wanda (Brian) Bazemore, Canton; grandchildren, Dean (Danielle) Grimes, Woodstock; Shawn (Katie Holbrook) Hardin, Nashville, TN; Nicholas (Morgan) Bazemore, Marietta; Tracy (Drea) Robinson, Canton; Kirkland Bazemore, Athens; Lucas Bazemore, Alpharetta; great grandchildren, Copeland and Harlow Bazemore; Otto and Lily Grimes; sisters, Myrtle Thomas, Atlanta and Louise Moss, West Columbia, SC ; brother, Clarence (Nell) Wright, Eatonton; and by several nieces and nephews, her HRBC family, close neighbors, and many other family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, February 20, 2021, 1:00 PM, in the funeral home chapel. The family will receive friends Friday, February 19, 4:00-8:00 PM, and 11:00 AM until the hour of the service at South Canton Funeral Home, 3147 Marietta Highway, Canton (www.thescfh.com ).
