Obituary for Dorothy Ila "Dot" Byrd

Dorothy Ila "Dot" Byrd passed away peacefully May 28, 2020. Dot was born November 14, 1933 to parents Jim and Beulah Etris Byrd. She was a lifelong resident of Ball Ground. She attended Cherokee County schools, and spoke proudly of playing basketball for the undefeated Ball Ground team. She also loved to travel and was always ready for a new adventure. Dot was not afraid of hard work. At a time when female owned businesses were not common, she opened Dot's Restaurant, which she operated in downtown Ball Ground for 49 years. The restaurant became the social hub of Ball Ground. There Dot served up hot meals and local news in fairly equal proportions.

Dot was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Edward Byrd and Alvin Byrd. She is survived by a brother James Byrd of Powder Springs, ten nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

Visitation will be at the South Canton Funeral Home on Saturday, May 30, from 5-9 PM. The funeral service will be Sunday at 2:00 PM at the Chapel of South Canton Funeral Home, with her great-nephew, Rev. Graham Arp, officiating. Following the service she will be laid to rest in the City Cemetery in her beloved hometown of Ball Ground.
